FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING THE BOWEL PREP

What if I have nausea with the prep?

Some people experience symptoms of nausea and vomiting with the prep. If having nausea, slow down the rate at which you are taking the prep, candy may alleviate the symptoms. Be sure to remain on a clear liquid diet. If nausea or vomiting persists, stop the prep and call your physician or the physician on call for further instructions (after hours you can call 910- 223-7011 and follow the directions of the answering machine to reach our on call doctor). If you have had problems with a specific prep in the past, be sure to discuss this with your physician or staff at the time your procedure is scheduled.

I almost finished my prep and I haven’t gone to the bathroom yet. What should I do?

Finish your prep. You may have a bowel movement within the hour but for some people may take a little longer.

If you have not gone to the bathroom at all throughout the night and it is time for the  2nd part of your prep, you will need to call their MD or the Endo Center.

I still have some solution left but I am having regular loose, watery stools. Do I still need to finish the rest of the prep?

Yes, you may have solid stool higher in the colon that still needs to be flushed out.

I have trouble with diarrhea even before taking the prep, do I still have to drink it?

Yes, you must take the prep as directed to be completely clean.

I finished all my prep, but I still see some yellow color in the toilet and a few flecks.

You should be able to see through to the bottom of the toilet. If you COMPLETED the prep as instructed, it is OK to see some small flecks, this should not interfere with the exam.

What can I do if my bottom gets sore?

Try not to wipe or rub when you use the toilet. You may use a wet/warm washcloth or non-alcohol base wipe to clean, you can also wash the area with warm water after every bowel movement.
